There is no doubt that these two homegrown SUVs have been among the bestselling Mahindra cars in their respective segment and the country. The Scorpio Classic is an old offering than the XUV700 and the latter is perceived as a feature-loaded urban SUV, while the former is perceived as a rugged SUV.

In addition, as you may know, the Scorpio Classic also has a new generation, which goes by the name the Scorpio-N. That said, a lot of new-age features can be had in the Scorpio-N.

However, coming back to the topic, the Scorpio Classic’s base model is roughly a lakh cheaper than the Mahindra XUV700’s base model. But the XUV700’s top model is double the price of the Scorpio Classic’s top model. The Scorpio’s price starts from Rs 13 lakh, ex-showroom.

So, let’s see how the Mahindra Scorpio stacks up with the Mahindra XUV700.

Specifications

For starters, let’s talk about the chassis of the Mahindra Scorpio. Built using the ladder-frame construction, which also underpins the Bolero, Xylo and Bolero Neo. Furthermore, the Scorpio Classic is solely powered by a diesel engine, which derives its engine from Scorpio-N’s less-powered diesel engine. As for the engine output, the 2.2-litre mHawk, four-cylinder, turbocharged diesel engine is tuned to churn out 130 bhp at 3750 rpm and 300 Nm of peak torque at 1600 rpm.

This engine is exclusively mated to a six-speed manual gearbox. Check out the location-based Scorpio Classic’s price here.

On the other hand, the Mahindra XUV700 is a replacement for the XUV500. It has its own designated platform. In addition to that, it can be had in both petrol and diesel engines. The 2.0-litre TGDi, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine can produce 197 bhp at 5000 rpm and 380 Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm. In contrast, the 2.2-litre CRDi, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel mill can churn out 182 bhp at 3500 rpm and 450 Nm of peak torque at 1750 rpm.

Both engines as well as Scorpio Classic’s engine have a mild hybrid technology and can be had with a standard six-speed manual and optional six-speed automatic transmission.

Suspension

Weighing the figures of the Scorpio with the XUV700, the latter is punchier and torquier than the former, be it diesel or petrol. Check out the XUV700’s price on the autoX website.

However, at the same time, the Mahindra XUV700 can be had with a front-wheel drive system or an all-wheel drive system. In contrast, the Mahindra Classic has rear-wheel drive (RWD) as standard.

Both homegrown SUVs store fuel in their 60-litre fuel tank.

Keeping the figures aside, let’s now jump to their suspension setups. The XUV700 has a more modern suspension setup than the Scorpio Classic. The XUV700 stands on McPherson Strut independent suspension with a stabiliser bar and frequent selective damping (FSD) at the front and a multi-link independent suspension with FSD and stabiliser bar at the rear. At the Mahindra XUV700’s price, a customer would expect a new-age offering(s).

On the other hand, the Mahindra Scorpio stands on the double wishbone, independent-type suspension with coil spring at the front and a multi-link suspension with coil spring and anti-roll bar at the rear. It has a hydraulic-type shock absorber as well, and that too, at both ends.

Brakes

If you ask about the blend of comfort and off-road capability, the XUV700 should be the pick. But, for a better off-roader capability, hands down it’s the Scorpio Classic. In addition, you can check out the old review on Mahindra Classic as well as the XUV700’s review so that you can get a better understanding of their ride qualities. Last but not least, these homegrown cars are designed keeping the conditions of Indian roads in mind, so they have fewer chances to let you lament the rideability they’ll offer.

If you are a rugged SUV, the Scorpio is the pick. Check out the Mahindra Scorpio Classic price here.
As far as braking duties are concerned, the Scorpio Classic has a disc-drum setup as standard, while the XUV700 has all-disc brakes as standard. A car with all-disc brakes will always offer a superior braking performance than a car with a conventional disc-drum brake setup. Moreover, the Scorpio Classic has a standard tyre profile of 235/65 R17. So does the XUV700 but its higher variants come with optional 18-inch rims.
